What is the effect of Vinegar on metal

<div class="IPBDescription">I have heard about this twice now</div>I have heard twice now about using vinegar on a pistol, what does it do? Does anyone have a pic of a gun that has the vinegar wash and how do you do it?<br />

Vinegar is a weak acid. But I don't know what purpose it would serve to use it. One thing you do want to stay away from is ammonia - it does a great job of cleaning but it gets into the microscopic pits in the metal and creates very fine cracks, among other things. I've seen pictures of bores that have been cleaned with ammonia and they are pretty bad.<br />
