That's a wrap! Thanks for a great season. See you all next year!

We should be shooting 2nd Saturday and 4th Sunday again next year.

Final schedule to be finalized in February.

What would you like to see next year?

dddd Gnome, gnome on the range!
Many folks came out to our shoots in October and the photo site has a number of photos of the range for those who couldn't make it to the shoots. There are many things we want to do to improve our operation next year, but what would you like to see us do? Give us some of your opinions and ideas on how we can improve the range for next year.

Thanks,
Could you get me one of those "Clean Shoot" thingies? I've never had me one of them and thought that it might be nice to get one.
  • Dad,
What if you just leave the clean shoots for Jason and I ????? <img src='http://www.goodguysposse.org/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/clapping.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':clapping:' />
I have had one, but Jason takes the cake, I think he has a few under his belt.
So if you insist on having one take some from Jason. <img src='http://www.goodguysposse.org/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/whistling.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':whistling:' />
Well, if the weather permits.., I'm going to attend Bristol's Turkey shoot with the Civil war guys and the cowboys. Call me weird, but I appreciate a little longer distance shooting at some challenging targets... I'd like to see some longer distance side matches , maybe............ Give me a few rounds in the dirt to find my mark and I'll try 50-100 yards on the pistol.............
So would I! I've always been partial to the longer range shooting and side matches are always a lot of fun. Side matches we hope to get started next year and maybe some longer range stuff the year after. If you have any ideas that might work in our setup, I'd sure be happy to hear them.
One of the things we want to do next year is to erect a wall between stages 4 and stage 5. This will allow us to have movement downrange for stage five during the match (like Oconomowoc) and the opportunity to have side matches there as you have suggested. Now all we have to do is to find sufficient railroad ties to build the wall. <img src='http://www.goodguysposse.org/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/innocent.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':innocent:' />
Let's see, I really like the area as it is, but since we're blue skying it . . .

1. area for food like we had at our prior location
2. stages that require you to shoot your shotgun, then a handgun, then the shotgun again, then another handgun, then the
shotgun again, then the rifle - you know, mix it up
3. bigger targets and a wider variety of targets
4. a vendor area
5. old west decorations
6. more stories about each stage - taken from western movies
7. a category just for those who use speed/slicked up guns with light loads and minimal recoil
8. more shoots than just once a month
9. team shoots where you partner with someone and scores are a total of both people
10. long range area

Guess that's all that comes to mind (what's left of it) right now . . .

Here's a few things that come to mind fairly quickly:
1. I would like to see stages written that leave it to the shooter to decide if they want to start on the left or right for the different sweeps.

2. I would like to see some side matches with .22s; mainly .22 rifles because I don't have a .22 single-action type pistol (unless pistols could be provided for everyone to use but, that's asking a bit much). You could set up 2x4s with holes drilled in them for candy suckers to be inserted for targets (biodegradable and inexpensive targets there, or use necko wafers or eggs, you get the idea).

3. I would like to see a class for large caliber, wart-hog type loads with gritty, dirty, hard to handle guns, oh, yeah, we have that already, it's called any class you want. (gotcha MGS)

4. If the targets could somehow be angled a bit more downwards to drive the lead into the ground that might help to eliminate some of the splash-back.
Most of what you mentioned will eventually come to pass in the next year or two. But I don't think that bigger targets are in the cards - just think, if we put up bigger targets, JJ might get a clean match and we'd have to listen to that for months and months and months..........
22 side matches may be a real possibility after we get the wall erected between stages 4 & 5. I know I'd like to shoot them. As to your last suggestion, we found that Rob's targets and our stands didn't always play well together. Grit has many of them at home now to work on them over the winter. That should take care of that problem.
What I think would be really cool if everyone was more conscientious as to what they wear to our shoots. SASS has some pretty specific guidelines as to what can/should and should not be worn. The sport is centered around looking like we just stepped out of old west history. I just think it would be really neat if we all looked like we did. Some of our members like Black Magic and Morgan Daniels go to extreme lengths to dress superbly. You'd think they were 1880 cowboys reincarnated. Besides, is there potentially an unfair advantage for those who do not dress old west? Wearing those authentic layered clothes, boots, vests, etc. and then shooting ain't the easiest thing to do . . . Just a thought.

Aren't Classic Cowboy and "B" Western the only classes that are costume-specific?
If there are some folks that need special shoes on account of infirmities of one type or another there should be some leeway made for them, otherwise, most folks dress the way SASS mandates.
If for some reason some folks don't adhere to the SASS guidelines then they should be told what to wear and to either start to "get with the program" or don't show up here anymore but, who is going to take it upon themselves to be the "costume/clothing police" and where is anything in writing that people have to follow?
i.e. shady bradys, velcro, plastics are not allowed as are Tee shirts or short sleeved shirts or combat boots or work boots with oversized lugs on the soles.
Be more specific so that maybe some concerns can be addressed.
Just being the devil's advocate here.

Yes it would nice and I know where you're coming from. Having said that I know that some might not have the dollars to get all the duds to play the part and with the price of ammo and components that we're gonna start paying now and the price of gas, etc., etc. I just don't think you'll ever see the "costume nazis" at any of our shoots. More concerned with the hardware (guns) and shooting appropriate to your category. Also don't want any newbie's to be intimidated by whether they have the right hat.

If you look at some of the stuff I wear you will see that a lot of it is starting to get a little threadbare and kinda nasty. Don't see me dedicating the funds to get the new duds as I got three shooters to load for and keep on the firing line. Might be a few others who have more than one to keep outfitted and shooting.

All points well taken. I just thinks it looks neat to really be dressed as they did in the old west. However, the cost is a huge factor today and I surely don't want someone to not shoot because they don't have the right clothes. As long as they are close, I guess that will be just dandy! I don't want any clothing police either cuz that would take the fun out of it. As I said, just a thought . . .

Have we ever considered a "Wild Bunch" stage? It could be optional so that folks who don't have access to a 45 wouldn't be penalized for the entire shoot, or allow the use of "Cowboy" guns also. I am including links to End Of Trail and Mule Camp rules along with a simplified set of rules. All of these were acquired from the SASS web site.
Perhaps later in the season we might try to put it together and perhaps it could be a side match before or after the main shoot. Also a few of us have the 1911's or clones that might be used as "loaner" guns.
Thanks Griz, sounds like fun. Later in the year we could set up one on stage five as a side match after the main match.
  • sounds like a good idea to me. Big Grit
