What are you using now that's making them so dirty?
  • DD,
I am using Greendot now and have about 4 lbs left.
Among the cleanest powders are Clays and Vihtavuori (all varieties). But any powder can leave a lot of carbon if the pressure is too low. Don't know much about Green Dot as I've never used it. Seems like what is "clean" for one shooter is "dirty" for another.

As I'm a dinosaur still using "Alliant Powders" I find Bullseye to be pretty clean and the Unique isn't that bad either.

I have attached some of my 38 Spec. loads and the bottom has the cowboy loads. This is basically an overview and of course when loading you must maintain all safe practices and I claim no responsibility for results in your guns.

The 4.7 of Bullseye is a little on the "warm side" with it putting out at about 1000 Ft. per sec. Does the job on knock downs but the light loads also take them out for me.

The loads on the top of the page are general loads with the specific loads being what I found to be the best for the specific weight bullet listed. Again, please approach any of the info with caution and/or call if you have questions. I also found that 231 burns pretty clean. Not necesarily for Cowboy, but I have found that with heavier bullets Blue Dot has given me extremely good results. I have a bunch of loads for 45 ACP/ Auto Rim that have worked very nicely for me. I've never loaded Blue Dot for Cowboy because I know that it won't be as clean and reduced loads are not what that powder is about. If you want those loads I can give you those.

  • A tight crimp is verrrrrrryyyyy important. It don't matter what brand ye usin iffin ya donut have a tight crimp( roll crimp is best ) ya will get some unburned powder and inconsistent loads...........JMHO Bandit

As one who is uneducated, which dies do which and how?
  • Saguaro KidSaguaro Kid Stick It In Your Ear
The dies for calibers that use roll crimps do the roll crimps, and the dies for the calibers that use taper crimps do the taper crimps.
Gee thanks SK!

When they first started coming out with the no lube dies I went out and bought the Hornaday Titanium Nitrate dies to replace all calibers that I load. So you're telling me that they are all taper crimps?
  • JJ........The boolets we use for cowboy (least the ones that I use) have a crimp grove (canalure?) above the lube grove........that is where ya crimp with a roll crimp (Lee Factory Crimp Die is the best in my humble opinion)...........so boolets wit a crimp grove = roll crimp

Now..... bullets for Bottom Feeders (Autoloaders) are usualy Jacketed and do not have a crimp grove even the ones without jackets do not have crimp groves and these are the ones that need a TAPER CRIMP.

Just my humble opinion........Flame Away........Bandit

Have been putting a very slight crimp on all my wheel gun ammo for some time. The 41AE is not really a crimp, but as close as I can adjust it without doing so.
