Wow, there was a lot dust I had blow off in this forum!!!<br />
<br />
I just read an article in the current chronicle about making homemade black powder. Has anyone tried this? How did it go?

    Used to make it when I was in high school. Not real good results until I made my own formula, then big booms.<br />

  • I tried it earlier in life also. It worked after a fashion. I loaded about 20 grains of it into my 51 C&B Navy. Force in a .36 Cal ball, greased the front of the cylinder with Crisco and put a cap on. Carefully rotated the cylinder, fully cocked the firearm. The cap went POP. The powder started a FSSSSSSSSSS type noise then a BANG. We watched the .36 cal round ball mosey down range at about 200 FPS that defied the law of gravity for about second.<br />
    Found it easier to buy the stuff. The bullets went faster too.<br />

    Good thing the statue of limitations is up for all you would be mad bombers!!
  • If GOEX, etc can't make black powder without blowing the whole place up every few years why would anyone even think about making their own??

    Don't know about anybody else but I was young and stupid. I did learn fast, though, after nearly setting fire to my friends house. Now I'm just too lazy to do it. <img src='http://www.goodguysposse.org/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':rolleyes:' /> <img src='http://www.goodguysposse.org/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':rolleyes:' />

    Gotta chisel the dust layer off this topic and brag. Today was a culmination of a weekends work and I think it is totally cool. <br />
    <br />
    Over the weekend i made black powder (a little more than 1/2 lb. ), pounded out 100 primers and rearmed them with matchheads, cast 210gr J/P big load and assembled 100 rounds using a 35gr load and homemade lube. (Paraffin, vasoline & STP). <br />
    <br />
    Loaded 100 rounds. (As well as 4 shotshells. )<br />
    <br />
    Well, today I fired them. Awesome. Chrono said about 840 for the revolvers and 920 for the rifle. Lots of smoke, sparks and boom. Better than I expected. <br />
    <br />
    But, now that I have done it I will just buy it. :-)
