That's a wrap! Thanks for a great season. See you all next year!

We should be shooting 2nd Saturday and 4th Sunday again next year.

Final schedule to be finalized in February.

Not the GGP way I remember

My son Brad (Lt. B. R. Sharps) came to the GGP shoot today so he could pick up the reloader that Dirt Pyle so graciously secured for the UW ROTC unit of which Brad is a member. He also came to personally thank Filthy Harry, JJ, and DD for their very kind donations to the program. He apparently was standing way back behind the shooting lines in the visitors area. He had on shades. He was asked to leave the area in a very rude and discourteous way by someone he did not know. There was no hospitality, polite request, nor offer to loan him eye protection (thought there was always extra up at the trailer). He was just told to leave. What if he had been a prospective member or just an interested visitor? Regardless, he was not treated in a proper way and I thought you should know...

Most disappointing!

  • Howdy Muddy, I'm very disappointed also, I did see him wandering around but just assumed he was a family member of another shooter. I did see that he was wearing shades (no problem far as I can tell, i did not read where you needed side shields to be a spectator). On my way our to the truck after the match he did speak to me, he asked if Dirt Pyle was there I told him I hadn't seen Dirt Pyle all day, and that I had doubted that he we even there. I could be wrong though.
I do think that all members need to be very careful how they talk to people and how we are perceived. We are all ambassadors to the sport.
I'm truly sorry your son was treated that way, and if I'd have seen it it would have bee corrected ASAP.
take care,
As I said in my email, I was not aware he was treated that way but I offer my apology on behalf of the Posse. I chatted with him on the way out and he didn't mention it to me. Dirt Pyle was not at the match today but I don't know if he had given the reloader to someone else to bring out.
  • Muddy,I had to leave the shoot early( i was not feeling to good)and i walked right by your son( idid not reconize him. He called out ,Wyatt to me and I turned and went over to him and as i did i said "Brad, how are ya, god you lost a lot of weight". He said, thats what army life does to you.All this time i thought he was "Brad"Johnny Popper's Son. I remember thinking to myself, i didn't know Johnny's son was in the Army. I swear to ya Muddy, i never dreamed it was the Lt.If i had known, i would have more time with him. Please let him know how i felt about this.If i had knowed i would have done something, thats for sure.

Wyatt, Brad (the Lt.) called me back after he left the shoot. He said he was very glad that he got to see you and at least say "hi."

When I talked to Brad early in the month we did aim to meet up at the shoot. He was not sure he could make it. He spoke of trying to get someone there if he could not be. I figured he would let me know. I probably should have checked in with him but with working 2 full time jobs and a family it slipped my mind. I could not be a the shoot because I got called in to work at the last minute. I apologize to both of you for any misunderstanding. I will call Brad when I have a few minutes in the next few days and will just ship the 550b to him.

Again sorry for the misunderstanding.
Mario, no apology necessary. Just a miscommunication. Just give Brad a call and I know he will work something out. His E-M is bfritz2@wisc.edu and his cell is 719.930.0339. Thanks for all of your help with Brad's ROTC unit!!!!
  • Dear Muddy: I wish I had heard someone being rude to a guest. I'd have jumped on em with both boots! this kind of behavior is NOT the cowboy way! I M Portly.

I'm sorry to hear that someone caused some hard feelings to Brad (LT) I recognized him right off, and said something to the effect that he had the right uniform of the day on as he was in shorts & T shirt. Then we talked about getting his Dillon and ROTC, but he didn't mention anything to me about being asked to wait in the Parking Lot. He did say something about not having the appropriate safety gear to be on the range, and we just let it go at that.

Let it be said that you have a Son to be proud of, and to whomever chastised him, please try to be more accommodating to our guests.
Was not at the shoot so I probably should not be making a comment, but you know I always find a way to stick my foot in it. If I understand this right it is about the lack of side shields...

Believe that the preshoot briefing always notes that we require "eyes and ears" including side shields. That being said it should be handled in a proper fashion and we have free ones in the trailer for spectators or shooters. If it was not handled in an appropriate fashion I apologize. Brad SHOULD NOT have had to wait in the parking lot and should have been given a pair of side shields from the trailer. If that was the issue; simply handing him a pair of the shields and asking him to please put them on is what should have happened. Enough said.
SOR (Start of Rant)

I have seen multiple instances where people have taken lead in the eye and that is unacceptable. It could cause the loss of insurance and then end of the shoots if it happens with injury, without even going into the injury and problems for the person taking the lead in the eye. That's why we require them (side shields) and since I pay the insurance bill every year I'm telling you it's already four figures without adding any accidents and possible loss of policy.

Safety First, Last and Always! Fun second.
• Jim, this was about the equal application of the rules. There were other spectators there that were not wearing side shields. There were wives in lawn chairs without side shields. If the rules is that spectators (I had understood it to be shooters on the firing line, guess I was wrong) need side shields, It should be applied evenly and with consideration. When I saw Brad walking around he was up on Huck's pass, NOT on the firing line. The main point of Muddy's post (IMHO) is that if you see a problem you don't have to jump down someone's throat and be rude to get your point across. It could have been handled better.
Mike, if you saw a wife or anybody else out there without the proper safety equipment I'd appreciate it if you would bring it to my attention. Everybody has a responsibility to keep our sport safe.

The way that Lt. was treated was unacceptable please offer him my apology and tell him thanks for his service for me.
  • Like i said I was unaware the rule applied anywhere but the firing line, and in that line didn't see anything wrong with either brad or the other spectators being without side shields. I now know the error of my ways, and will do as you ask. Since the rule is stated at the shooters meetings, which spectators are not required to attend, this policy might not be known to them.
Yes, that is true. And that is why we have someone at the trailer checking anyone coming onto the range. She may have been at the Ladies necessary at the time.
