EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE
Last week I told you that our resolve would be tested and tested again and again; and it was later that day. HB0997 was brought to a vote and we fell short. Brandon Phelps (D-Harrisburg) wisely put the bill on postponed consideration meaning it could be recalled for a vote later. We will recall it sometime in the future. We were confident we had the required 71 votes but early in the afternoon the legislators received a full-fledged assault pushing them to vote no on the bill. Speaker Madigan’s staff worked hard to get their votes changed. They were joined by people from Governor Quinn, Lisa Madigan, Cook County State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez, and of course Rahm Emanuel. The big advantage they have is they can send their people on to the floor to lobby. Everyone else has to stay out. This is a big unfair advantage governmental organizations have that others do not have. This should be changed.

Late Friday we learned of a new bill which was supposed to be a compromise bill. Senator Bivins (R-Dixon) and Kwame Raoul (D-Chicago) were assigned to work on the bill. In the end it turned out to be a bad, bad, really bad bill. Senator Bivins wanted nothing to do with the bill and he removed his name from it. As you might imagine it turned out to be a typical gun owners nightmare from Chicago. The bill which will be, we believe, SB0848 has not been assigned to committee at this time. That could change by the time you get this.

Next week both the House and Senate will be in session and the action will really start in earnest. There will be all kinds of stuff flying around the internet most of which will either not be true at all or half-truths at best. Watch for alerts and take action as the alerts request. Next week’s session starts on Tuesday and runs until Friday. We will be there doing our very best for you.
