ISRA Applauds Override Of Governor Quinn's Veto Of Concealed Carry Legislation

SPRINGFIELD, Ill., July 9, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The following was released today by the Illinois State Rifle Association (ISRA):

The ISRA is congratulating the Illinois General Assembly for overriding Governor Quinn's recent veto of concealed carry legislation. By overriding the veto, the general assembly is affirming that law-abiding Illinois citizens have a right to defend themselves with the most effective means available -- the defensive firearm.

"Over the past several weeks, the good people of Illinois have had to endure political showmanship, political gamesmanship, and ultimately political brinkmanship," commented ISRA Executive Director Richard Pearson. "But, in the end, good sense won out over the gun control extremists and Illinois now has a framework in place to allow citizens to defend themselves."

"Of course this legislation is not perfect," continued Pearson. "Both sides had to engage in give and take to get where we are today. Over the coming months and years, we'll see what in the law works and what doesn't. We'll fine tune the concealed carry provisions when necessary with the goal of maintaining high permitting standards while ensuring that the right to self defense may be exercised freely when circumstances warrant."

The ISRA is the state's leading advocate of safe, lawful, and responsible firearms ownership. For more than a decade, the ISRA has represented the interests of millions of law-abiding Illinois firearm owners.
Illinois enacts nation's final concealed carry law

July 9, 2013 (CHICAGO) -- Illinois became the last state in the nation to allow public possession of concealed guns as lawmakers rushed Tuesday to finalize a proposal ahead of a federal court's deadline.

Both houses of the General Assembly voted to override changes Gov. Pat Quinn made to the bill they approved more than a month ago. Some lawmakers feared that failure to pass something would mean virtually unregulated weapons in Chicago, which has endured severe gun violence in recent months - including more than 70 shootings, at least 12 of them fatal, during the Independence Day weekend.

The Senate voted 41-17 in favor of the override Tuesday afternoon after the House voted 77-31, margins that met the three-fifths threshold needed to set aside the amendatory veto. Quinn had used his veto authority to suggest changes such as prohibiting guns in restaurants that serve alcohol and limiting gun-toting citizens to one firearm at a time ...
Lawmakers override Quinn's gun veto

SPRINGFIELD – State lawmakers rejected Gov. Pat Quinn’s changes to a landmark gun law Tuesday as they brought Illinois into compliance with a federal court order to legalize the concealed carry of loaded weapons in public.

The move by the General Assembly sets in place a system in which Illinoisans will eventually be able to tote guns in certain public places if they meet training requirements and pass background checks for criminal behavior and mental illness.

“We made history today,” said state Rep. Brandon Phelps, D-Harrisburg, who has been working for a decade to bring Illinois in line with the rest of the nation on handgun laws.

“I think concealed carry will work. I think crime will go down,” Phelps said. “I think people should just give it a chance.” ...
